The Expense Behind the Ice Ball Press
There are many reasons why ice ball presses are expensive, but we will use this article to explain how the precision ice presses are made. Every product, whether it is a metal ice mold or otherwise, goes through several stages before landing in your hands as the consumer. Each destination that takes it from a piece of metal to a perfect ice press has costs associated. We will walk through the ice press process in 3 main stages. The product we will use today is our own Pressice Barware Ice Ball Press here.
3 STEPS OF THE ICE BALL PRESS
- Research and Development. Every product that's ever been made and produced has to be designed first, right? Not only that, but with products such as ours, there are physics that make the ice ball press a unique product. The need for thermal equilibrium makes the metal ice mold absorb massive amounts of temperature from the ice block quickly. This is calculated, tested, and validated in the research and development side of the lab. These labs have engineers and software to test the ice press, so the premium product ice ball press has high costs in that department. The administrative and branding expenses also go into overhead as the product lines expand beyond the ice ball press.
- Manufacturing. The ice ball press is manufactured in several steps. First, the material is purchased from a metal supplier, whose prices fluctuate significantly. In the case of manufacturing the ice ball press, there have been significant changes in the production of aluminum, copper, and steel due to labor shortages and increased demand. Once the metal ice press blank is on the manufacturing floor, the machines are turned on and the metal ice press halves are cut to exact tolerances. These press halves are anodized, which is a process of plating the metal surface of the ice press to seal it from contaminants and add the colors. See more of how we do custom manufacturing here.
- Packaging and Shipping. One major factor in how expensive the ice press is, is simply the weight. With each ice ball press weighing in at 4.7 pounds, the costs of shipping the product as it is manufactured add up. With a premium gift product like the ice ball press, quality packaging is critical so that the end customer doesn't end up with a scratched or dinged ice ball press.
